The Arts and the Practice of Technology

The root of the word technology is techne, which happens to be the Greek word for art. And the whole word, with the ology at the end, means "the study of art." Technology is a practice, not a product. Not a thing. It's the practice of examination and experimentation and artisanship. The things we think of as technology are only evidence of the practice.

I like to think of technology as a way of both seeing the world and being in the world. As a philosophy. To be a technologist, you need to examine things, understand how they operate, and create ways to make them operate differently. It's as simple as that. And in that sense, I consider everything I do as both an artist and as an arts administrator to be completely technological.
