DC Theater Demographic Analyses

For the last eight years, Gwydion Suilebhan has been collecting data about the demographics of the plays, playwrights, and directors that make up each DC theater season. Since 2018, the work required for this ongoing analysis has been supported by theatreWashington.

The current analysis of the 2019-2020 theater season, which was truncated by the COVID-19 pandemic, is the result of a collaboration with theater artist Olivia Haller. The report was intended to cover every production that opened between September 1, 2019 and August 31, 2020, though most productions were closed by March, 2020 instead.

Previous analysesof the 2018-2019 theater season, the 2017-18 theater season, the 2016-17 theater season, the 2015-16 theater season, the 2014-15 theater season, the 2013-14 season, and the 2012-13 seasonare also available for reference.

There are currently no plans to perform an analysis of the (virtual) 2020-2021 theater season, but the study should resume when theater-going resumes post-pandemic.
